Driver History

Nigel Redwood started his race career later than most, establishing himself as a professional businessman with a university degree prior to entering motor sport.

In November 2001 Nigel completed a race intensive course at the International Silverstone Race School where he passed the ARDS written and practical examination and obtained his first race licence.

The course was a chance for Nigel to fulfil a dream and obtain the opinion of professionals to ascertain the level of Nigel’s natural ability to become a successful race driver. Following the successful completion of the course, the instructors recommended and encouraged Nigel to take part in the 2002 BRDC Single Seater Championship.

The BRDC Single Seater Championship is run by the Silverstone race school, using 1997 Formula Fords all prepared by one race team, thus providing identical race cars to every competitor. As a result the championship is determined by the skill of the driver and not the budget of a team.

The expectation of Nigel in 2002 was low because the competition in the championship was very tough. However, Nigel was the surprise package of the season, finishing a very close 2nd in the championship. The championship was only decided following the 15th of 16 races. It was a very close season, and the top five drivers are all hotly tipped to continue in Motorsport. The 2002 BRDC Single Seater Championship table finished as follows:

Following the completion of the 2002 BRDC Single Seater Championship, Nigel was approached by the top teams in the UK National Formula Ford Championship, the pinnacle of Formula Ford racing in Europe (and a considerable step up on the racing career ladder).

Nigel tested for a number of top teams, and chose Team MDR as the team that would provide him with the best package for 2003. Team MDR is run by the ex Formula 1 driver Martin Donnelly and as a result offers a very professionally run team with connections throughout the sport.

Nigel is therefore competing in a Van Daemon RF01 prepared by Team MDR in the scholarship class of the 2003 UK Formula Ford Championship. The question is whether Nigel can again be the surprise package in this category against drivers who all have a considerable amount more of race experience.
