UK Formula Ford National Championship - History

For the past 35 years Formula Ford has been the crucible for young stars to make their mark and has launched the careers of stars such as world champions Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher.

Formula Ford was created in 1967 when a new championship was born to fill a space for a junior formula to take young drivers from karting and help them towards a Formula 1 career. Managed by Ford Motor Co. the formula had 1600cc ford engines and the chassis were made by different manufacturers all trying to develop stronger and faster designs.

The championship was an instant hit. The drivers learned vital skills that would make them into future champions. By 1975 there were so many FF cars in circulation that drivers were being turned away from meetings. Formula Ford 1600 continued successfully and is still going strong today. The format got a little tired however and was not attracting the young drivers who have been enticed by the more modern single make formulae that have sprouted up in the wake of FF.

In 1994 the new Ford Zetec 1800 engine was introduced to replace the ageing 'Kent' 1600cc unit and in 1995 slick tyres were introduced.

The Formula Ford chassis, the choice of which is not restricted as in other formulae, conform to strictly policed technical regulation and boast the very latest thinking in engineering and design.

Teams rely on technical feedback drivers provide and, in turn, the drivers gain the experience of working closely with leading engineers and preparation experts. This specialist knowledge is crucial, as drivers have to comprehend and react to ever-increasing levels of technology as they progress.

Many younger drivers entering the sport are looking for a career path and Formula Ford has undoubtedly been a breeding ground of talent for many great drivers: James Hunt, Jody Scheckter, Jenson Button to name but a few.

In 2003 the series continues to be part of the support package of the coveted MSA British Touring Car Championship. This year the championship will be contested over 20 rounds at 10 venues.
